Sheriff Principal Anwar who was also the first Sheriff Principal from a minority ethnic background, when she was appointed Sheriff Principal of South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway by the Lord President in 2020. She will remain SP for this Sheriffdom until a successor is installed in June.

On behalf of the resident Sheriffs, Summary Sheriffs and Justices of the Peace, many of whom were in attendance, Sheriff Lindsay Wood welcomed the Sheriff Principal back to the Sheriffdom where she served as Sheriff from 2014 until 2020.

Sheriff Wood said: “You were a valued and highly regarded colleague always willing to take responsibility and you were hard working.  You were popular with the staff and respected by the bar and our loss was South Strathclyde’s gain when you were appointed Sheriff Principal of South Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway in 2020 just as Covid emerged.

“Not surprisingly you excelled as a Sheriff Principal and led ground-breaking initiatives which were good for the Scottish justice system as a whole.  I have no doubt that you will excel as our leader here too and be inspirational.”

Sheriff Principal Aisha Anwar said:” “Glasgow Sheriff Court has always been referred to one of the busiest courts in Europe.  Together, I hope that we can further enhance its reputation as one of the most efficient, one which priorities access to justice, one which seeks to improve the experiences of all court users and one which commands respect by continuing to dispense justice without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.”

Sheriff Principal Aisha Anwar served as a sheriff from 2014 and part-time sheriff from 2011. She has recently been appointed to the Scottish Court and Tribunals Service board and is a member of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland and chair of the Summary Case Management Pilot Project Board.
